Told in the first person, the book is the story of the narrator's investigation into his imprisoned friend's alleged involvement in a domestic terrorist organization that has carried out a deadly attack in the USA. The book is an exploration of the American national character and identity. It is a novel about wrestling with what it means to be an American today.
