Hélène Gelèns


Hélène Gelèns (1967) is a Dutch writer of poetry, essays and short prose. Her debut poetry collection niet beginnen bij het hoofd (Don't Start with the Head, 2006) was shortlisted for the 2007 C. Buddingh' Prize for New Dutch Poetry. Her second collection zet af en zweef (Launch and Glide, 2010) was awarded the prestigious Jan Campert Prize for Poetry.
Poems by Gelèns have been translated into German, Spanish and Albanian. English translations have appeared in literary magazines in the UK (Ambit (2009), The North (2010), Poetry London (2011)), and the USA (Interim (2009)). Gelèns often performs in literary festivals, sometimes accompanied by musicians, and she has written the libretto for an oratorio, Voices (2007). She is a founding editor of the new literary journal Terras and is working on new poetry and a prose debut.
