Gerda Dendooven

Gerda Dendooven (1962) is one of Flanders' most important illustrators. Her slightly anarchistic drawing and writing style continues to shatter the illusion that the world of children is a rosy one. She uses vibrant, caricature-like and strikingly colourful drawings and collages to cut, paste and reassemble an extraordinary universe in which nothing is what it seems, relationships are misplaced, oppressive chill and enchanting warmth go hand in hand, and the thoughts and interpretations of the careful observer and reader can lead in almost any direction. In short, the unbounded imagination is a predominant feature of her work.
