Annelies Verbeke


Annelies Verbeke (b.1976) writes novels and plays. Her screenplay Dogdreaming, from 2001, was selected for European Pitch Point in 2003, a Berlin Film Festival scenario competition. She debuted in 2003 with Slaap! (Sleep) that reached a wide readership. She received the Women and Culture Debut Prize, the Golden Donkey's Ear and the Flemish Debut Prize. This novel was also longlisted for both the AKO Literature Prize and the Libris Literature Prize. Slaap! is available in several languages and in over 22 countries worldwide. Verbeke's novel was praised for its bizarre look at extraordinary people who are all searching for fulfillment. Her second novel Reus (Giant) was published in 2006, and one year later, Groener gras (Greener Grass), which was on the longlist for the Golden Owl and nominated for the Gerald Walschap Prize. Her most recent novel, Vissen redden (Rescuing fish) (2009), was nominated for the BNG New Literature Prize and was longlisted for the Libris Literature Prize.
