Chantal Mouffe

Chantal Mouffe (1943) is a Belgian-British philosopher and political theorist. She is Professor of Political Theory at the University of Westminster and has taught and held research positions at many universities in Europe, North America and Latin America. Between 1989 and 1995 she was Directrice de Programme at the Collège International de Philosophie in Paris.

With Ernesto Laclau she developed the highly influential ‘discourse theory’ and together they published the landmark Hegemony and Socialist Strategy: Towards a Radical Democratic Politics (1985). In her research and books such as The Return of the Political (1993), The Democratic Paradox (2000) and On the Political (Routledge, 2005) Mouffe investigates the current state of democracy and the rise of right-wing populism, and formulates an ‘agonistic’ model of democracy, as opposed to the consensus model. She is internationally recognized as one of the most prominent voices in the debate on (the crisis of) politics and democracy. In Brussels she will close the Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2012.
