Freek Mariƫn

Freek Mariën (b. 1988) is a Flemish writer and theatre maker. He studied drama at the KASK in Ghent, and during his training performed in productions of, among others, HETPALEIS and De Maan.

In 2009, together with Sarah Van Overwaelle, he founded De Nietjesfabriek, a youth theatre company for which he wrote, among others, Derwazeens (2009), Altijd tijd voor taart (2012) and Wachten en andere heldendaden (2014).

With Het Kwartier he is currently working on shows for young people and adults. In his work Freek Mariën puts the emphasis on a strong text, a solid factual basis and an original form or theme. His texts have won several awards, among others the Kaas & Kappes Toneelschrijfprijs (the prize for the best theatre text for young people from the Dutch- and German-speaking region, 2012) and the Taalunie Toneelschrijfprijs (2015).

In 2017 there will be the premiere of De schaar van de tsaar, a collaboration between Het Kwartier and Corpus Ca, for which Freek Mariën wrote the text. It is a comic show about the absurdity of rules, about value(s), illusions and (self-)deceit.

At present Mariën is researching a tragedy around Limonov and writing a children's book for the Davidsfonds. He is also a guest lecturer at LUCA Drama. In 2017 he will be in residence for a month in Ledig House.
