Doris Kareva


Doris Kareva (1958, Tallinn) is Estonia's best-known female poet. She has so far published 12 volumes of poetry, including a book of children's verse. She is a translator, essayist and literary critic and has also compiled three anthologies of Estonian poetry. She is also the editor of the weekly publication Sirp and secretary-general of the Estonian National Commission at UNESCO. Kareva's minimalist poetry plays on the tension between conveying a clear message and the multiplicity of meanings. Her poems have been translated into 15 languages, including Dutch, Russian, German, Swedish, English, French and Latvian. She has received literary prizes for several of her collections.
